In case you haven't noticed yet, our seminar "Wissenschaft und Verantwortung" ('Science and Responsibility', University of Cologne, summer semester 2004, "taught" by Kay Gonzalez, Ingo Breuer & myself) was a COMPLETE SUCCESS! For those who can read German, there's the original course description at (a rather cumbersome URL): uk-online.uni-koeln.de/cgi-bin/show.pl/comment?ck=089l926k645906989k6k06066367590992976k66656059928m9l056k646459998m9l056k67My own page, meant for the last third of the semester when I arrived on the scene, with links to many readings (of which we only did a small portion) is: www.punksinscience.org/kleanthes/courses/WVAnd to give you a taste of what happened afterwards -- seminar Tuesdays from 5 to 7pm, then drinking with everyone until dawn or drop or whatever came first (the entire semester, every Tuesday!) -- check out some photos and videos from the two final post-classes at: www.dennisott.de/uni/germanistik/wvHere don't miss the wonderful soundtrack, the new WV-anthem: www.bodywithoutorgans.de/data/marcus_vs_the_music-nutten_und_koks.mp3That's it for now. Always ready to continue the discussion. Cheers!

Have to agree, the seminar was a success -- although some of the participants (including me) preferred sitting down & listening to standing up & debating most of the time, which was certainly not helpful to you, Kay and Ingo. Thus, strangely enough, it seemed to me that the final debate on our debating style was the most lively of them all... But I still hope that this was the result of a fairly 'progressive' attitude shared by all those who kept attending the seminar, providing not that much of a controversy of opinions that had probably been helpful. Anyway, the seminar was throughout a great experience to me. Kay's part was not only interesting, it was sort of eye-opening to reflect about issues like methods of law-enforcement on a highly abstract level. And -- now having an idea about how important the book actually is -- I feel somewhat ashamed for not having known Rawls' Theory of Justice at the time... Ingo's sessions struck me particularly because of their 'meta style': this was virtually the first time that I felt invited by a seminar to think about what me and my fellow 'Geisteswissenschaftler' are doing all the time. His honest words about rituals and habitus in science were not really encouraging, though... Finally, your (Kleanthes') sessions covered a variety of topics that should be discussed in seminars like this one more often -- at least as long as most students believe that 'anarchy' is a synonym for 'chaos'. I'd like to see names like Edward Said or Michael Albert appear on more seminar reading lists. Alas, there was just not enough time for all those interesting and important topics. We'll need a W&V sequel, I'm afraid... Dennis P.S.: I linked this forum at the W&V site. Hope some will join in here so that we can keep up the communication via this platform.
