The best way for a community to develop here is if we all know a little about each other.
I'm Zach, a student at University of California: Berkeley. I'm planning on majoring in Psychology and then attending medical school.
PIS appeals to me because despite the roar of the counter culture movement in Berkeley just a few decades ago, I'm a bit of an outcast with green hair. When I stumbled upon the PIS website I realized the truth of the manifesto. While Berkeley is a large enough school that I've been able to find people who share my interests and the persecution is anonymous enough to be ignorable, I recognized that in a smaller less notoriously liberal institution, people such as myself wouldn’t fare quite as well.

Great, this is good for a start. Where's everyone else? WHO is everyone else? I'm Kleanthes, enjoying the Life of Reilly in sunny Cyprus. For more info, my homepage is /kleanthes. I'm a linguist and started (well, try to start...) PIS over three years ago with Jeff for the reasons outlined in the Manifesto www.punksinscience.org/manifesto.html and elsewhere. In case you're wondering, I define myself as PUNK through music and ideas, not by looks. (For starters, there's barely any hair left to be dyed -- green or any colour!). Hopefully, this site, and especially ZZ's ingenious suggestion (the PIS-FORUM) will pick up. As a general call: does anyone have the know-how and time to develop a nicer looking homepage, or throw in any other ideas? I started a few general forums yetserday, things we might want to get involved with discussion-wise, but this is ALL OPEN TO SUGGESTION. We hope to develop a network service for a community, not a one-sided dictatorship by decree. Everyone and anyone who's interested in developing PIS should do his/her best to do so. Needless to say, there's always room in Cyprus if anyone wants to come for a great vacation! KK

Howdy, all! I've been waiting for something to happen with PIS for awhile, so I'm glad to see this happening. Kleanthes: three snaps up, in the Zorro formation. I'm Gwynne, and I'm on the 14-year undergraduate plan (<---sarcasm...I hope) at Salisbury University in Maryland. I've been studying billfish parasites for about five years now, and although I still enjoy punk shows in dive bars as well as acts of civil mischeviousness, I can only yearn for my blissful days of multicolored tresses, hence my presence here. I'm also a leader/follower/believer in Amnesty International, and I head up our chapter at Salisbury. Which hasn't gotten much done so far this semester, admittedly.

I am probably changing the topic pretty sharply, but the problem I wanted to talk about almost hurts me. What can one do if the community one is in is developing pretty rapidly in the direction one doesn't like? In the school I worked for till January, bribes are very common and taken more and more openly. And a lot of the students are satisfied with the situation - many of them prefer to have more free time and then buy the grade or the term paper (where possible). Everyone knows the situation is like this, and the attitide is, like, well, everybody takes bribes in the academia, it is nowadays the normal situation. I did not sell grades in my classes and know other people who do not; I also feel that I could not go on with my academic career in this country because the higher up you go, the greater the pressure grows. I know other people who feel the same way. It seems, though, that nothing can be done. This country used to be famous for the education it can give. Now quite a lot of people carry diplomas they bought - they do not know much (or even know nothing) about their profession. It seems than nothing can be done about it. They say that not all schools are like this, but I have not met anyone from a school where bribing does not take place. Leaving is not a solution (although this is what I myself have done - at least temporarily). What could be a solution?

Hi everyone! I'm Jeff.
First I want to say thanks to ZZ for the great idea. I'm really excited about this forum, and I think it's a big step forward for PIS.
I'm a linguistic scientist. My dissertation is about incorporating data from the empirical domain known as 'variation and change' into the general theory of the human language faculty. Besides that, I'm interested in theoretical morphology and syntax, and the Minimalist Program. I've also recently become concerned with the lack of interaction between theoretical linguistics and other related scientific disciplines. (On this topic, see my post in the linguistics forum.)
I've been a punk for about 17 years, but I sort feel like I always was one. I have despised the authoritarian mainstream culture ever since I was a child. When I discovered punk it felt like home. I realized then that I hated them not because they had rejected me, but because they are morally and intellectually despicable and worthy only of contempt. (Any punk knows who I'm talking about.) As Klea mentioned, I think that fashion is the least important aspect of punk culture (although I have a great affection for it, naturally). My favorite music is hardcore and its descendants (metalcore, grindcore, mathcore, etc.) I'm an anarchist, which does not mean that I'm committed to any particular political theory, but only that I reject the moral legitimacy of authority.
I live in a fantastic part of Brooklyn with my wife. We love to have visitors, so any PISers who are coming to New York City, drop me a line and we'll have drinks!
That's my introduction, and I'll be talking to you!!

Hi, Jeff! I do not look like a punk and have never really been one - I have actually been a 'good girl' for most of my life (as long as I can remember, actually), and now it seems pretty boring. Interesting people flock together in places where good girls with their hair of its natural color don't go. It is boring and unrewarding to be an example of good behavior, so I guess this is one of the reasons why I'm here. Another reason is there are good linguists among punks, so I hope to also talk about language sometimes. So far, you are the only one who managed to reach the place where one can talk about language. How did you do that? This may sound dumb, but I have tried many times, and the computers say I am not allowed to access that page. Do I need to make a donation or something? Natasha

Kleanthes - thank you! I figured it out myself a little later. I am not very smart about using computers and this is the first time I've joined a forum. Sorry for dumb mistakes!

Well, now that I registered for this forum, I feel somewhat obliged to introduce myself. I certainly don't look like a punk, and I've never been in the least interested in linuistic theory. Anyway I like to think for myself and have little respect or love for authorities or media who want to dictate the masses what to think. As such, I do have respect and symphathy for all who feel likewise. So I will stop by in this forum from time to time and listen to anything you have to say (except for linguistics, that is).

My name is Daniel Rubino...and I'm a punk and a linguist. (in the context and sound of an AA Meeting... ;D )
In all seriousness though, or something alluding to it... I'm in the Ph.D. Linguistics program at the City University of New York (CUNY) where I spend as much time, if not more, with the Speech and Hearing Science department.
Jeff, hate to steal your thunder, but: 1) I live in NY 2) I consider myself a classical anarchist 3) I too agree that linguists need to work more cloesly with the "other" sciences. 4) and I love punk music
So I think we have to fight to the death. LOL.
(next is a rip off of my "blurb")
I would consider myself a biolinguist (see Jenkins, 2000). Originally from Connecticut, I have a B.A. in political science from Siena College, NY with minors in biology and psychology, recently completing graduate work in language acquisition & syntax at the University of Connecticut and Boston University. Broadly speaking, I am concerned with two questions put forth by Chomsky in regards to language: What are the relevant brain mechanisms? & How does this knowledge evolve (in the species)? Agrammatism appears to be an appropriate disorder in which to study the former and in which I concentrate, while the latter we can only speculate (at this time).
Currently I am thinking about prepositions, the lexical/functional divide and how this may affect theories of agrammatism (following Froud, K., 2001) as well as movement in language and reasons for it. I also have a general interest in exploring language evolution (phylogenetic development), ontogeny, syntactic theory (P&P/Minimalism) and the architecture of the language faculty (FL).
I'm also a Projectionist here on Long Island (the most evil place in the Northeast..eck)

Hi, Andrew Nevins! Where exactly in Russia are you going to? And what do you mean by "some linguistics" (I am really curious). Wherever it is, I do hope you are going to enjoy it. And don't be mislead by Moscow - the rest of Russia is very different (the opinion everyone but Moscow people share). I live as far south as you can go and still remain in Russia proper, geographically and politically. Actually, I hope to leave Russia this summer (I cross my fingers here) because I am married to an American (have been married to an American since July 2002, to be precise), so I am really itching to finally change the empire of my permanent residence (how else can I feel in these circumstances?)
