OK folks, FYI: while he was in Cologne, Kleanthes and I discussed the idea of promoting the PIS site with t-shirts etc. NO PROFIT, of course, as he already said in the "Introduce yourself" thread. So just for kicks, I made a few quick designs, all of which I just thought up very quickly without consulting with any of the official PIS members. So if you think this sucks, feel free to bash me or just delete this thread... -Burn Design 1: "PIS off!" front: back: www.bodywithoutorgans.de/data/PISoff_back.jpg[/img] Design 2: "Rose" (for Mr. K himself, maybe?) front: back: Design 3: "Manifesto" front: back:

Of course, if anyone's interested, it'd be great to see other people's ideas. Here are the blanks: black front black back white

Burn rocks! For a quick brainstormer this is supercool! A couple of things: 1. I also talked about merchandising with Jan W who is currently doing a revamp of the site (see below). 2. "My" avatar is stolen from my favourite German band, the wonderful STAGEBOTTLES (http://www.stagebottles.de) who I am about to translate their band history into German -- AND THEIR FOURTH ALBUM JUST CAME OUT! -- So yes, I would like that rose'n'bones if I get Olaf's OK (and if people like it) 3. I understand that this is just a brainstorm, so a final version would look less crooked (sorry Burn, I don't want to be picky) -- and we need our own font! So, as for the new PIS-site, here's a few points: 1. Christina U has created a really cool new logo; it can be viewed (and commented on) at punksinscience.org/PIS/pis.jpg . 2. Jan W will create a new design with that logo (or renditions after feedback) -- the new page will be something like his own thing (in German: http://www.kulturbrause.de), a little less stuff, a little more "order" ( ), but the idea is clear: one can sign up for access, will be mailed a password, and once logged it can post stuff (texts, links, papers) -- there will be plenty of space for a nice open source project -- and hopefully everyone can get his or her own PIS-address too! (If one so wishes.) The VERY ROUGH (for my eyes only) design suggestion is at www.kulturbrause.de/punks/punks3.htm . ANY FEEDBACK, COMMENTS, SUGGESTIONS, AND FURTHER CALLS FOR HELP & SUPPORT WILL BE GREATLY ACKNOWLEDGED!

Sure thing, like i said, just a brainstorm, did this thing in about 10 mins or so. Just to get some input on what you and the other people think. Anyone care to get specific on what should be different? As for fonts, yeah, i just took this stenciled font, thought it looked ok. There are other fonts out there, of course. But do you really wanna create your own PIS font, or did I get this wrong? You might wanna check these out, they are freeware and could work well with the site and related designs, IMHO: www.1001fonts.com/font_details.html?font_id=2568www.pennyzine.com/fonts.htmAs for the new site design, I think it looks very good. Although, I think it sacrifices the "Punk flavour" the old site had for content surfacing and better visibility. I think it should be more punk. In my opinion, the new site design equals science with natural science (see formulas and test tube images in logo), that's at least how it comes across to a certain degree. Maybe there is a way of introducing more punk elements? Like a watermark (a fixed background image; Jan W will know this) over which the content of the site scrolls? Also, I just thought of a possible problem. If you will offer free email addresses, people might come and register just for the sake of the email address. Not only those who think this address is cool, but also others who might use the address as a fake address to do stuff you might not want to be affiliated with (hackers, crackers, spamming etc). In either case, this will create traffic that someone will have to pay for (depends on your contract with the provider, whether email traffic is infinite or must not exceed x Gigabytes per month). The worst thing that could happen in a worst case scenario is that your bandwidth is exceeded and the site will be shut down until the next month. I know, this is unlikely to happen, but nevertheless you might wanna check that out first.

Sounds good. Reactions:
- "natural" science was our initial thought anyway -- but in the end everyone is his own judge whether he thinks he's doing "science"
- i didn't mean to create a PIS font -- there's gazillions out there, let's just pick something cooler than stencil, that's all i meant (thanks for the links)
- good point about email addresses -- whoever wants one get in touch with me and i be the judge... (fuck all this democracy!)

Just read through the usage policy on the pennyzine.com site. If you want to use these fonts for a webpage, you'll need prior consent from the author of the fonts or at least drop him a line which font you're using. But with the nature of his site that won't be a problem (see usage policy below)... LOL

Hi, Dan - great to find you here again. How are you doing?
The new site design looks awsome, and looks like the new logo could also look OK on a shirt. It will have a somewhat worn look and if you add well-worn and well-torn jeans ...

Hey Natasha, Yeah..been busy this summer. My prof. got a grant that I'm working on and actually getting paid! what an amazing thing.... Unfortunatley the work is straying further from traditional theoretical linguistics and is causing me to put the brakes on a lot of other projects/commitments, but I'm learning how to use ERP (event-related potential) which is cool. so it's a trade off. other than that, gearing up for the Republican convention here in a couple of weeks! How's your summer a going?
